Kolkata Weather This Week: Rain, Thunderstorms and High Humidity Expected

If you're planning to spend time outdoors in Kolkata this week, carrying an umbrella won't just be a good idea, it will likely become part of your daily routine.

According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata is expected to experience a week of light to moderate rainfall, frequent thunderstorms, and persistently high humidity between July 19 and July 25, 2026. While widespread flooding is not forecast for the city itself, residents should be prepared for sudden downpours, lightning, gusty winds, and temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas.

For many Kolkatans, this is a familiar phase of the southwest monsoon. The weather can change quickly, from bright sunshine to dark clouds and heavy rain within an hour. Commuters, students, office workers, and visitors should therefore keep an eye on daily forecasts before heading out.

Today's Weather in Kolkata (July 19)

Sunday is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy, with intermittent rain or thundershowers throughout the day. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach around 33°C, while overnight temperatures will remain warm at approximately 28°C. High humidity, around 95% during the morning, will make conditions feel more uncomfortable than the temperature alone suggests.

Although rainfall amounts may vary across different parts of the city, even short showers can briefly affect traffic during peak hours.

Rain Expected to Increase During the Week

The weather pattern is expected to become more active from Tuesday onwards, with rainfall becoming more widespread across Kolkata and surrounding districts.

Between July 22 and July 25, the IMD forecasts:

• Light to moderate rain at many to most places.

• Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.

• Gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h.

• Periods of reduced visibility during heavier showers.

While the city is not currently under an extreme rainfall warning, neighbouring districts may receive heavier spells of rain during the second half of the week.

Why Kolkata Feels So Uncomfortable During the Monsoon

One question visitors often ask is:

"Why does Kolkata still feel hot even when it's raining?"

The answer is humidity.

During the monsoon, moisture from the Bay of Bengal keeps humidity levels exceptionally high. Because sweat evaporates more slowly in humid conditions, the human body struggles to cool itself efficiently. As a result, a day with a temperature of 32–33°C can feel significantly warmer than the thermometer indicates.

This is one reason many first-time visitors are surprised by Kolkata's weather during July, even if they have experienced similar temperatures elsewhere in India.
